Undocumented: June 12 - June 17

Who and what do we choose to document and why?

2016/Feed

Aida Lizalde

"2016/Feed" is a video performance which is both an act of self‐ degradation and an act of political resistance. As a metaphor to assimilation and an expression of socio‐political anxiety, Lizalde lets the american flag consume her with its sugar coated consumerist nationalistic values.

Phil America

‘Bright Stars’ is a series of American flags by artist Phil America. Over a period of the first 2 weeks of the most recent Presidency, the artist collected clothing worn by illegal immigrants as they crossed the US‐Mexico border without permission in search of a better life. Their clothing was then disassembled and hand‐sewn into American flags.

Marco Williams

I wanted to make a film about migrant deaths. I wanted their stories to be the primary narrative. I did not want Americans to be seen as heroes. However, how can you do this, given that the dead don’t talk?

Michelle Angela Ortiz

Over 30 volunteers and community members from Juntos came out to help artist, Michelle Angela Ortiz, place her artwork in front of the ICE building on 16th and Callowhill.  With the support of Juntos and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, they were able to place the words 'WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS, RISKING OUR LIVES, FOR OUR FAMILIES AND OUR FUTURE" in front of a building that decides who gets deported in this city.
